We put our research first.
Welcome to the Multi-Agent, Robotics, and Heterogeneous Systems Laboratory, led by Professor Rafael Fierro, a distinguished figure in the field of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Fierro, who joined the University of New Mexico (UNM) in 2007, brings a wealth of expertise gained through his extensive academic journey and research endeavors.
Our Origin: Where Innovation Found its Space
Professor Rafael Fierro holds an MSc. degree in control engineering from the University of Bradford, England, and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. Prior to his tenure at UNM, he made significant contributions during a postdoctoral appointment at the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing & Perception (GRASP) Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania and as a faculty member at Oklahoma State University.
Dr. Fierro’s current research interests are multifaceted, encompassing advanced manipulation for on-orbit servicing, coordination of heterogeneous multi-agent systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). His work has garnered support from prestigious entities, including AFRL, AFOSR, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Energy (DOE), Sandia National Laboratories, and Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC).
Research Focus
At the heart of our laboratory is a dedication to advancing knowledge in hybrid and embedded systems, heterogeneous multivehicle coordination, cooperative and distributed control of multi-agent systems, mobile sensor networks, and robotics. At the UNM MARHES Laboratory, we lead innovative research in mobile sensor networks, cooperative control of unmanned vehicles, and hybrid systems.
AgMan Laboratory
Dr. Fierro also directs the UNM-AFRL Agile Manufacturing Laboratory, a co-operated laboratory between the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and UNM. The lab focuses on orbital robotics, agile manufacturing, smart satellite development, and the frontier of In-Orbit Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (ISAM).
Join us on a journey of innovation and exploration at the forefront of robotics and automation. We strive to make lasting contributions to academia, industry, and the community through our passion for research and education.
